Top priority January acquisition for Chelsea in the transfer window is in the forward department.
Little wonder they have been in the transfer news concerning Strikers like Callum Wilson, Mauro Icardi, Gonzalo Higuain, Edison Cavani amongst others.
Footytool’s Adekanye Opeoluwa makes an assessment of the aforementioned players;
(1) Callum Wilson; Bournemouth don’t want to sell their star attacker but sooner rather than later, the newly capped Three lions of England international would have to leave the Cherries. He has been impressive in the League this season, scoring 9 goals.
Wilson is a strong powerful forward whose style is bullish and would certainly favour smaller players like Hazard and Pedro who would feed off the ball behind him.
Verdict– Good Striker, may just be the perfect in the interim for January. Getting Wilson is very realistic, Bournemouth are a selling club. Wilson would want to play in Europe. Won’t be too much of a risk because he already plays in the Premier League.
(2) Edison Cavani; PSG want Chelsea to splash more than 50 million pounds for a proven goal scorer like Cavani. The price tag is not much of a problem. Chelsea have cash to splash, we have even seen less talented players sold for more.
Verdict; would not favour a transfer to Chelsea in January as PSG are on course to winning trophies once again this Season. Would be a realistic summer signing and would do wonders but he has less than 2 good seasons in him.
(3) Gonzalo Higuain; A possible transfer to Chelsea in January looks complicated. He is on loan to AC Milan from Juventus where he has scored 6 goals in the Italian Serie A.
Higuain as a Striker has previously blossomed under current Chelsea Manager Maurizio Sarri when the pair where at Napoli, the Argentine bagged a record 36 goals in the Italian Serie A.
Verdict– Age may be a limiting factor in Chelsea’s decision to buy Higuain, Sarri wants to work with him again, we have seen him bring Jorginho to Chelsea, displacing Kante from his favourite role because of a Jorginho he really believes in. The amount of trust Chelsea owners have in Sarri would determine if they would go for him.
(4) Mauro Icardi; perhaps the biggest fish in this list. Real Madrid wants him, Juventus wants him. He stands as the most natural finisher in the Serie A right now and has found the back of the net 9 times in the Serie A and he is captain of Inter Milan.
Verdict– Inter Milan would not be willing to let go of Icardi in the January transfer window, a possible transfer in the summer would be most likely, but Chelsea would need to spend as much as a 100 Million pounds for the hitman at least.
The question of who is the perfect Striker for Chelsea remains difficult but one which the owners of Chelsea must find an answer to.
Clearly, Chelsea must improve on the Morata/Giroud options to stand a good chance of making top 4 in the League and winning a trophy.
Not one player ticks all the boxes rightly, and with the January transfer window fast approaching its deadline, Callum Wilson may just be the perfect Striker fit Chelsea.
