San Mames witnessed a spectacular opening day to the 2019/2020 La Liga season as Athletic Bilbao defeated champions Barcelona 1-0 thanks to a wonderful volleyed goal with his first touch of the ball in the 89th minute.
Barcelona were second best in the first half with Athletico Bilbao playing without fear and had two powerful shots on goal by the impressive Inaki Williams saved by Andre Ter Stegen.
Luis Suarez did come close to scoring for the defending champions but saw his shot hit the bar and the ball cleared before he was substituted with a knee injury.
Rafinha who replaced the Uruguayan also saw a great effort come off the crossbar with Athletic keeper having his fingers slightly on the ball.
Veteran striker Aritz Aduriz who will retire at the end of the season scored a sensational volleyed bicycle kick goal barely seconds after replacing Inaki Williams with a minute left to play.
The joy expressed by the Athletic players and fans were splendid to see with the Basque side temporarily topping the La Liga table.
Aduriz duly dedicated the wonder strike to his family at the post match interview by the touchline.
