Five Key Ways Arsenal Can Strenghten In January To End ‘Top Six Hoodoo.

Arsenal were defeated 3-1 by a rampant Liverpool in Match day 3 of the 2019/2020 Premier League season after wins over Newscastle United and Burnley.

Salah netted twice as Liverpool strolled past Arsenal.

Liverpool were the only other team with 100% record into the new season.

To end (or minimise) their embarrassing results against their top six rivals Izuchukwu Okosi offers five tips and key signings the Gunners need to make in January.

(1)Buy An Imposing, Versatile World Class Defender Who Is Two Footed; The defence has always been the weak link in Arsenal’s teams for more than 10 years.

The Gunners attacking prowess is undoubted so despite having some of the finest strikers in the Premier League if not in the world, the defence has remained their Achilles heels.

Its a new dawn at the club with the new hierarchy seemingly desperate to return it to glory days which makes this post viable.

The club must push out the boat and make a statement signing in January AFTER selling Skhodran Mustafi.

Dayot Upamecano would be a great addition for Unai Emery’s side.

The suggestion for a two footed defender is to be able to cover positions across the back four that could be hit by injuries and suspensions.

(2) BUY A Physically Imposing World Class Defensive Midfielder;

Liverpool were credited with interests for Chelsea’s Jorginho and Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira but eventually settled for then AS Monaco’s Fabinho due to his imposing 6ft height.

Arsenal need such midfield players because they are usually bullied by more physical teams. So it should be a priority for Unai Emery in January.

Ndidi fits the tall defensive midfielder options Arsenal needs.

Sell Ozil, Mkhikitaryan; Buy A Right Footed World Class Speedy Winger

This writer is/was a big fan of the duo of Ozil and Mkhikitaryan whilst at Real Madrid/Germany and Borussia Dortmund respectively but they are currently the shadow of their old selves and with big wages.

It will be be a great business to move these players especially Ozil and get a player like Wilfried Zaha (who wouldn’t command the wages if both fading stars).

Zaha adds more pace and depth to Arsenal.

(3) IF Monreal Must Be Sold Before Next Summer, Promote Left Back From U-23

A disturbing news broke before Arsenal’s match against Liverpool that Nacho Monreal had agreed a two year deal with Athletico Bilbao and could move before the transfer window in Europe shuts on September 2.

Monreal is 33 years old so understandably he could be sacrificed rather than Saed Kolasinac as back up to Kieran Tierney but there are four competitions that Arsenal will play in so need the bodies as injuries and suspensions will strike.

It will be best the club keep the left back until January at very least then promote left backs from the U-23 side.

(4) Target And Make BIG Offer For Ruben Neves

The loan deal for Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos has no buy clause. He’s heading back to his parent club next summer.

Arsenal should make a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ruben Neves in January with a stupendous offer and sell Mohamed Elneny.

Neves adds long range goals- a quality no one in the current Arsenal squad possess.

(5) Sign Another Experienced Goalkeeper

Bernd Leno is a quality goalkeeper but Arsenal need a good back up or competitor for the German.

Emiliano Martinez would still get his chances in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup but Arsenal need a good keeper to support Leno for Premier League and Europa League commitments.

P.S: Realistically Arsenal will not roll out the trolley dash in January for five acquisitions but from the aforementioned, it will be wise to get a defender (following the sale of Mustafi), a goalkeeper and a certain Ruben Neves through the doors.

Arsenal must also keep their star players at the club and resist any attempts to sell.
