Barcelona booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League courtesy of a 5-1 win over French outfit Lyon in the second leg of their last-16 tie at Camp Nou.

The contest was delicately poised following a goalless draw in the first leg, but Ernesto Valverde’s side were far too strong for Lyon in the second leg, scoring through Lionel Messi (2), Philippe Coutinho, Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele.

Barca have not won the Champions League since 2015, but will be present in Friday’s draw and their performance on Wednesday night would have sent out a strong message to the rest of the competition.

At the Allianz Arena Sadio Mane scored twice to become his side’s outright record away goalscorer in Europe as Liverpool beat Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Allianz Arena to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Senegalese forward opened the scoring for the Reds on the night with a well-taken finish, leaving Bayern needing a couple of goals following on from last month’s goalless first leg.

An own goal from Joel Matip gave the Bavarian giants hope of pulling off a comeback, but Virgil van Dijk headed home a second for the visitors and Mane then rounded off the scoring late on – his seventh goal away from home in continental football, moving him ahead of Steven Gerrard and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool kept Bayern quiet over the 180 minutes, conceding the Matip goal somewhat against the run of play, and they will join fellow Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City in Friday’s draw for the last eight.

The draw holds at 12pm Nigerian time on Friday.
