Missed Transfer targets and so what? Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United are ready to go- Let’s play Football!

Manchester United have been sorely ridiculed for failing to land any of their central defence transfer targets ahead of the 2018/2019 Season.

Its been miss and miss  for Manchester United every time Jose Mourinho points at a Centre back option he would have loved to add to his squad.

Harry Maguire was a big miss.

Yerry Mina was a big miss with the Colombian opting for Everton instead.

Diego Godin was another miss with the Uruguayan defender set to sign a contract extension with Atletico Madrid.

Toby Alderweireld was another big miss despite reports that Manchester United agreed personal terms with the Belgian during the Transfer Window.

The essentiality of the summer Transfer window is bolster one’s squad ahead of the new Season.

Do Manchester United really need a center back?

Will Manchester United crumble because of their inability to sign a center back?

The Media successfully made Manchester United’s failed bid to get a defender a big deal and Manchester United’s aproach to the issue did not help matters.

In Jose Mourinho’s Words;

“It is difficult for me to believe that we finished second, because you are capable of making people finish second look like they were relegated and you’re capable of making people who win nothing and finish below us look like serial winners”.

“I keep saying, thinking and feeling that the second position last season was one of my biggest achievements in the game”- Jose Mourinho taking dig at the Media.

Manchester United were in for almost every defender out there and losing bidding wars to clubs like Everton which should not happen given Manchester United’s pedigree and rich war chest.

In all of this ridicule, Manchester United will not crack in the 2018/2019 Season.

Defence has always been Jose Mourinho’s strong point as a coach. From his early days at Porto, to his first Coming at Chelsea, to his days at Inter Milan, his days at Real Madrid and his second return to Chelsea and his continued Managerial progress at Manchester United.

There are few Managers in Europe whose team has built a better defensive reputation than Jose Mourinho.

Since joining Manchester United ahead of the 2016/2017 Season, Manchester United have conceded the least amount of goals in the Premier League.

In the 2016/2017 Season, Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United let in 29 goals
In the 2017/2018 Season, Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United let in 28 goals with only Champions Manchester city letting in fewer goals.

Putting Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United’s defensive records on a bigger perspective, Manchester United concede well below 1goal per match in the Premier League.

So why all the Fuzz, why all the noise?

This quote from Jose Mourinho answers many things;

“But again, the perception of the people that read can be different, but I like my players and my group. I enjoy the last season, the fight to finish where we finished and to manage the best position in five or six years”

“I’m going to enjoy this season. Again, I know the words you want me to say or not to say. It depends on the music, but words for me don’t come easy”

“I think by the end of November or December, you don’t need words – you will see by then which teams are candidates to win the Premier League. In this moment, words are not important”

“Let’s play football and by the end of November or December, you don’t need words. You will see which teams are candidates”- Jose Mourinho addressing the issue of mised transfer targets and talking about how his team will fare.

Attack is the best form for defence, Manchester United have a very complete squad, Romelu Lukaku can give you 25 Premier League goals, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford can contribute over 20 goals between them, Alexis Sanchez a goal scoring winger can contribute 20 plus goals.

Juan Mata, Fred, Lingard, Herrera, Matic gives Manchester United a blend of  experience, strength and creativity.

Phil Jones, Marcus Rojo, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly are the defensive options available to Manchester united and with Jose Mourinho as the anchor man, they can do the job.
