Paris St Germain’s Icardi gamble; Burden or Bargain?

French giants, Paris St Germain signed Mauro Icardi on transfer deadline day to bolster their attacking options which already consisted of Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Neymar.

PSG had a summer entirely doused in speculation and controversy majorly surrounding the future of Neymar and even though they managed to hold on to the Brazilian, it looks like even more controversy is on the horizon with the addition of the mecurial Argentinian striker, Mauro Icardi.

Icardi’s prolific career at Inter basically ended in controversial fashion midway into last season as he was stripped of the captaincy and banished from the first team by manager, Luciano Spalletti.

Inter’s new coach, Antonio Conte made it very clear since his appointment in May that the Argentine wasn’t in his plans so his exit from the Nerrazurri is not a surprise by any means.

What was however surprising was the fact that top clubs around Europe were hesitant to sign such an immensely talented player, mainly due to his activities outside of the pitch.

Manchester United reportedly rejected a chance to include Icardi in the deal that saw Lukaku move to Inter, Real Madrid also passed him up to sign Luka Jovic, and the club’s that did inquire about him only wanted a loan deal.

PSG did eventually sign him on loan with an option to buy for 70 million euros to add to the likes of Neymar, Cavani and Mbappe, not forgetting Pablo Sarabia and Angel Di Maria thereby forming a frightening attack but also vastly increasing the likelihood of dressing room issues.

Icardi brings controversial reputation to a PSG dressing room that already had a good number of issues, most notably the Neymar/Cavani penalty war two years ago.

It’s not hard to see why PSG are willing to take the risk though, his ability as a top-quality striker is simply unquestionable having scored 111 goals in just under 200 league appearances for Inter in his six seasons.

If things however fail to work like many predict, then the club has a lot to lose. PSG are juggling with too many balls and things could come crashing down very badly.

Icardi is the latest chemical to stir into the pot hoping to get a Champions League-winning combination. Instead, this could explode in their faces and create a huge PR nightmare.
